IAN STREET

NAME Ian John Street.
BIRTHPLACE Croydon.
PREVIOUS CLUBS Old Coulsdon Albion, Manor Rangers, Nat. West Bank AFC, Odiaxere WF,
CHILDHOOD CRUSH
Sally Geeson (Sid James’s daughter in “Bless This House” also in Carry Ons), Lady Penelope (posh totty, but with strings attached), Roberta Tovey (“Susan” in “Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD”).
FAVOURITE PROFESSIONAL PLAYER OF ALL TIME
Bryan Robson. He carried United and England single handily for years.
FAVOURITE BROWNS CLUB PLAYER AND WHY
All of them but if I have to name one, Rod Simpson for being the great character he is and what an unbelievable career.
MOST DIFFICULT BROWNS CLUB OPPONENT
Andy Liddell but I have always played with him (Matron!) and not against him so I’m going to cheat and go for two…..Gary Bristow and Nick Bergman. Gary is a complete midfield player wins the ball, passes it well, great energy and scores goals. Nick anticipates what you are going to do and those long legs have a habit of “nick”ing the ball. He scores some crackers too. Play those two together in midfield, they would take a lot of beating.
MOST MEMORABLE MATCH
26/5/1999. Bayern 1 Manchester United 2. Meeting Bryan Robson in the Port Olimpic in the afternoon before the game and having a beer with him. Blagging my way into the hospitality area after the game and subsequently holding the European Cup on the United coach (next to Fergie) and waving the players off (including a 12 year old Kasper Schmeichel on his dads lap)……. Long story….😁
BIGGEST THRILL-I am going to bore you with three, hope thats ok….1/ In case you haven’t heard 😜, I got the job of introducing my boyhood hero Russ Ballard on stage a few years ago. UK including the 02, Portugal and Germany so far….I do podcasts for him too….you only have to ask for a link? 😀 2/ Introducing or being Lord Hurd’s warm up act (Douglas, the Foreign Secretary during the Gulf War. Yes, the Ice Cream head on Spitting Image)…..These were dinners where we invited potential new clients and LH would arrive from the House of Lords with his “speech” written on a tiny piece of paper. I would chair the evening and was his introduction describing his CV/career in detail as well as “selling” Coutts to wealthy prospects sitting around the table. I did some research by reading his memoirs (still available in all good bookshops 👌) and if the Q and A went quiet I had some topics up my sleeve (like Thatcher flirting with the French PM or why didn’t we go all the way to Baghdad and take them out after winning the first Gulf war). Lovely man. “Bravo Ian”. He also asked me to host one of his book launches (The life of Robert Peel, also still available at all good bookshops 🤩).3/ I was at one point the bank’s liaison with Camelot. I would often collect the Lottery Winners cheque on behalf of the winner in preparation for meeting them. Received a call from Camelot in the North West one Friday night (we had been selected from the panel)….cheque to collect for a winner living in Manchester. Took 20k in cash so the winner could treat themselves while the cheque cleared (well from our point of view, it wasn’t going to bounce was it?🤣).Would you believe it, United were at home on that Sunday…..took Karen with me went to the game (having collected the cheque and spoken to the winner in the morning). By the afternoon there I was, sat in a pub near Old Trafford with a beer before the match, gorgeous lady on my arm (she’s reading this), £20m in my pocket and just about to watch the reds….life doesen’t get much better! (Oh, probably had a curry afterwards too……😂).
JOHN LENNON OR PAUL MCARTNEY?
Macca….I love Lennon but P McC has always been my favourite, especially “Wings” in the early days.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Playing against the inmates of Parkhurst High Security prison in the IOW and seeing that the guy I was marking had “cut here” tattooed across his neck. Afterwards his “guv” told me he was in the nick for murdering his mum and keeping her in the wardrobe (as one does) 💀.The crowd, easily 200 strong in matching donkey jackets were quite entertaining…when the ball went out of play, one guy pulled a balaclava over his head and said to me “do you remember me at your bank” 🤣. Our keeper who was exceptionally busy and playing a blinder was told when retrieving the ball behind the goal ” ‘ere keeper, ‘aving a great game….if you ever do bird in this nick you’re in the first team” 🤣.We got totally hammered. They thanked us for playing as they all wandered back to their cells at the final whistle (we were told not to move) to be locked up for the rest of the day (and we retired to a country pub to reflect on our experience)……the Ripper was a guest within the premises at the time but didn’t make an appearance, for his own safety we were told…. 😳 (On reflection, giving their skipper the IOW good pub guide at the toss up was probably a mistake….😂😳)

BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON CAREER
Dad for music….took me to my first gig (Argent) age 12 in September 1973. But in business, my old Coutts boss Jim Burke. Charismatic and a great sales guy/role model that you would run through a brick wall for and would never want to let down. He boasted he was a former “Fairy Snow” Man of the year…..proper salesman!
BIGGEST DRAG IN SOCCER Injuries and losing.
